The city of Mankato, for which the fictional Betsy-Tacy setting of Deep Valley was based upon, declared Betsy-Tacy Day on October 7, 1961. The Betsy-Tacy Societys mission is to preserve Maud Hart Lovelaces legacy and works, through the restoration of her childhood house, and the childhood. The first book in the series, Betsy-Tacy, was published in 1940 ten titles later, the last book in the series, Betsy's Wedding, was published in 1955. Her well known children's series, known as the Betsy-Tacy series, started in 1938 after Lovelace began telling her childhood stories to her daughter Merian. Lovelace's first publication, The Black Angels, was published in 1926. In 1928 they moved to Claremont, California and had a daughter, Merian, in 1931. We celebrate the spirit of the Betsy-Tacy books and the life of Maud Hart Lovelace. Maud married Delos Lovelace in 1917 they lived apart until 1919 due to Delos' military service in World War I. The Betsy-Tacy Society was established in 1990 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving important local landmarks and keeping these wonderful books in print. Her life growing up in Mankato with her family and two sisters would later give inspiration for her writings, most notably in the Betsy-Tacy series. Several organizations, including the Maud Hart Lovelace Society and the Betsy-Tacy Society, promote her works.Maud Palmer Hart was born Apin Mankato, Minnesota to Tom Hart and Stella Palmer. Born in Mankato on April 25, 1892, Maud Palmer Hart lived in this home at 333 Center Street until. She also coauthored a number of adult books, including One Stayed at Welcome (1934), Gentlemen from England (1937), and The Golden Wedge (1942), with her husband, writer Delos Lovelace. Her other children’s books include The Tune Is in the Tree (1950), The Trees Kneel at Christmas (1951), and The Valentine Box (1966). She is a founder of the Maud Hart Lovelace Society and, though the newest generation of Betsy-Tacy fans don’t know it, this group was instrumental in getting the books back into print. She began writing the Betsy-Tacy books in 1938. Children’s literature consultant and former librarian Kathleen Baxter is a Betsy-Tacy expert who corresponded with Lovelace beginning when she was 11 or 12.

While recuperating in California she sold her first story, “Number Eight.” She continued writing after moving to New York City in 1921, publishing her first novel, The Black Angels, a historical work set in Minnesota, in 1926.

After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Minnesota but dropped out for health reasons. Lovelace was born in Mankato, Minn., on April 26, 1892. Lovelace based the stories on her own childhood and friends.

The 13-book series, which won praise for its historical accuracy, chronicles the friendship and lives of three best friends from childhood to marriage in the late 1800s and early 1900s. author Maud Hart Lovelace is best known for her popular Betsy-Tacy books for children.
